Tasty expansion: Cosmopolitan Catering picks up bigger space in Sunnyvale

December 5, 2012 - Co-owners Joe Schumaker, right, and Jacob Caputo, left, started with an event focus, but found business cafes was a steadier sector for Cosmopolitan Catering.

A booming midsize corporate-client base means Cosmopolitan Catering workers labor cheek-by-jowl to prep thousands of meals every day.

They'll now get some much-needed elbow room, thanks to the purchase of a new, 22,222-square-foot facility at 1288 Reamwood Ave. in Sunnyvale. The company is currently in about a quarter of that space at 649 South Bernardo Ave. in Sunnyvale.

"And we're going to fill it, from to day one," said Rick Angelini, director of sales and marketing for Cosmopolitan Catering.

Reggie Lee, a broker with Meacham/Oppenheimer CORFAC International, represented the seller, a private partnership. He said the building saw strong touring activity and about three offers before the winning bid from Cosmopolitan Catering. The building went for about $2.3 million. Ben Caputo, a senior associate with CBRE, represented Cosmopolitan Catering.

"You're right off Lawrence Expressway and 101, so it's a perfect location for getting anywhere," Lee said.

The Business Journal wrote in October about the fast-growing private company, which supplies meals primarily to companies of between 300 and 1,200 workers. Recent client pickups include Specialized Bicycle Components Inc. in Morgan Hill and GoPro in San Mateo.

In fact, Angelini said his research showed the 160-employee company now operated the largest privately held cooking facility in the Bay Area.

"It'll give us room to take on the amount of clients that are demanding our product," Angelini said. "Right now we are at capacity as defined by space. There are only so many chicken breasts we can cook out of the ovens we have."

Cosmopolitan Catering is a full-service caterer and specializes in recurring lunches and dinners, corporate social events, and on-site cafe and cafeteria management.
